The White and Red Tiger surfboards are John John Florence’s latest designs.
White Tiger

The White Tiger is Pyzel’s latest addition to the Funformance category. Designed specifically for average to below-average waves, this board offers versatility in your surfing experience.
The White Tiger features a clean and stubby outline, characterized by a full nose and wide squash tail. Unlike some other designs, it does not incorporate a hip, and the wide point is positioned 1 ½” forward of the center. The tail width is slightly wider than the nose.
In terms of thickness distribution, the White Tiger concentrates volume towards the front with a beak-nose design. This configuration ensures ample volume under the chest area, enhancing paddle power and ease of catching waves.
The board’s bottom rocker maintains an even and flowing profile throughout, remaining flat from nose to tail. This design enables the board to quickly rise on top of the water, facilitating speed build-up and carry.
Underneath, the White Tiger features a single/double concave through the front two-thirds of the board, transitioning into a pronounced double concave towards the rear, extending through the fins and tail.
The single/double concave generates lift, enhancing speed, while allowing smooth rail-to-rail transitions. The vee running off the tail facilitates quick rail engagement, enabling easy turns into the lip.
The White Tiger’s deck is relatively flat, blending into tapered rails. This design preserves volume in the board while maintaining sensitivity during turns. It allows for easy pumping down the line without feeling excessively buoyant.
For optimal performance, and depending on your surf skills, the White Tiger 2-5″ should be ridden shorter than your regular shortboard. Also consider adding ½ to 1″ in width and a bit more volume than your usual board.
Both John John Florence and Ivan ride 5’6″ White Tigers, despite their regular boards being 6’0″.

Red Tiger

The Pyzel Red Tiger is a high-performance shortboard that offers a good surfing experience in less-than-ideal wave conditions – John John Florence’s fast and fun board vision.
The Red Tiger’s main characteristic is its ability to perform exceptionally well in small to medium-sized, slower, and weaker waves. It’s like having a secret weapon in your quiver for making the most of those mediocre conditions in the water.
Outline: the Red Tiger leans towards the plump side for a high-performance shortboard. However, the wider tail squash provides extra lift, drive, and pop, which enables you to pull off nice aerial maneuvers.
The moderate hip by the front fins creates a pivot point, allowing for tighter turns and lip releases.
What sets the Red Tiger apart, however, is its rocker and bottom contour. The rocker refers to the curve of the board from nose to tail. In this case, the Tiger boasts the flattest rocker among its high-performance shortboard peers.
The flat rocker, Pyzel’s flattest high perf board so far, translates to great speed right from the moment you catch a wave, even through flat sections and super weak, small waves.
While a flat rocker can sometimes limit your ability to turn and maneuver, the board incorporates a bottom contour that keeps it easy to roll from rail to rail and ensures maneuverability. This helps with stylish carving and vertical moves, even in tight, pocket-y waves.
Another key point is the nose-to-tail thickness flow, well-balanced and clean. The front of the board is slightly thinner than the back half, resulting in good control and responsiveness.
The deck is designed to distribute more foam towards the rails, adding stability without compromising maneuverability.
Regarding sizing, the Red Tiger should also be ridden around an inch shorter than your regular high-performance shortboard, and slightly wider for control, speed, and maneuverability.
To figure out the right size, take the volume of your regular board and add 1/2 to 1 liter for that extra zing in weaker waves.
Pyzel recommends the John John Techflex Futures or FCS II Performer fins with the Red Tiger as it was designed with these fins in mind.
The Pyzel Red Tiger is probably a faster board than any other Pyzel surfboard. Whether you’re a newbie or an intermediate surfer, this board might very well improve your surf sessions, particularly in weaker, smaller, or blow-out waves.
