Overview of the Finless CCMD Cruiser

The CCMD Cruiser is a stylish, fully handmade 28″ mini cruiser with a classic fish (swallowtail) surfboard shape.

The design is clearly inspired from the surfboards in the 50s, reflecting the company’s surf heritage DNA.

Being an older surfer, the design and logo also makes me think of G&S, Bear, and other legendary surf brands.

At 9.25″ wide, the CCMD is wider than other popular minis of similar length, e.g. the Landyachtz Dinghy (28″ x 8″) and even the already-wide Loaded Ballona (27.75″ x 9″).

CCMD cruiser specs

The CCMD is quite sexy to look at. The cruiser features a big and wide kicktail. Aggressively angled at the tip, it lets you pop or kick the board very easily.

The cruiser also has a slight nose kick (unlike the Ballona, my go-to wide mini) which acts as an effective foot stopper when riding fast. It also comes in handy for some nice manuals and cool surf style tricks.

Another thing worth noting on this board is the special concave that runs all the way from the nose to the tail. The concave is quite pronounced – a “medium” on my personal scale, vs something like the Loaded Poke which I would classify as “aggressive”.

For comparison, the Ballona and most Carver surfskates have milder concaves IMO. Here’s the thing though: while the CCMD boasts a solid widthwise curvature visible to the naked eye, it’s very smooth and progressive from rail to rail (as opposed to abruptly raised edges).

This makes it very soft and comfy, with nice foot lock-in but without getting in the way for moving your feet around and adjusting your “surf stance”.

One more thing, the deck is fully covered with recycled crushed clear glass. This not only lets the board’s aesthetics shine through, it has the right level of coarseness for a perfect balance of grip and freedom of movement.

Deck construction

The CCMD deck has a 7-ply rock hard canadian maple core. Finless intricately makes the top and bottom sheets of different wood veneer – padauk, maple, dyed poplar sheets. That’s what those lines are on both sides of the deck!

They don’t use any paint! It’s all wood veneer stitched together.

Now that’s not something you won’t easily find in other boards.

Another things is, eco-friendly products are used throughout the process, from the clear coat, to wood selection, to recycled crushed glass grip.

Complete setup

The CCMD cruiser complete comes equipped with the great looking 150mm 50º Paris v3 Matte Black trucks – one of the industry’s best carving trucks.

The Finless Urethane wheels are poured from classic clear vintage red polyurethane. The 65mm diameter provides nice roll speed and easy rolling over obstacles.

The 80a duro is soft enough for a cushy ride and solid grip when carving, yet is hard enough for some nice speed, and for some rad tricks and street slashing.

CCMD cruiser Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Awesome vintage surf looks
  • Nice and stable ride for such a tiny deck
  • Designed for carving and pumping
  • Big functional kicktail for curb hops and tailslides
  • Suitable for bowl

Cons:

  • Ride height – more effort for pushing (not ideal for LDP or bad knees)
  • Stiff malpe deck + harder wheels = some vibration
  • No wheel wells (only slight flares) so risers are needed with the big wheels
  • Tail wears out quickly if you do lots of manuals
  • Single mount hole style

Riding experience

The CCMD instantly feels familiar and comfy, even for a rider my size (6’2, 180lbs, size 12), due to the generous platform and super wide mid section – something relatively uncommon for a 28″ mini.

The nose-to-tail progressive concave also gives you confidence foothold when riding fast down a hill or attempting some nice surf-style slides.

The ample and nicely angled kicktail is super sensitive and allows for quick pops, hops, and kick turns. Combined with the 150mm Paris RKP trucks, it makes this cruiser very nimble and turny, great for boardwalk or sidewalk cruising.

The relatively high ride adds leverage over the front truck. The wide nose lets you position your front foot over the truck for a super responsive and snappy ride feel (turns on a dime).

The transparent but effective grip adds to that secure feel when riding aggressively, yet without hindering your foot movements.

The long wheelbase (for the deck size) makes the CCMD quite stable at speed. The complete comes with 1/4″ risers that prevent wheelbite when running the 65mm wheels and the Paris trucks. The risers result in a slightly higher ride – but that’s always the tradeoff.

Here’s what I think this cruiser is best for:

Surf style carving and slashing

Definitely in the CCMD’s DNA. It’s got the looks and the capabilities. The deck and setup are all geared toward this kind of riding.

When I look at this board, I feel an irresistible itch to swap the Paris trucks for a set of Carver CX or C7 – I’ll definitely give that a spin and let you know.

Pumping

The stock setup is pumpable out of the box. Not “flex pumping” like on an Icarus or a Chinchiller (the CCMD is too stiff for that) but surf style pumping -i.e. full body, head-shoulders-hips-ankle motion.

Truck leverage definitely plays a role in the CCMD’s pumping ability.

Commuting

A compact portable setup, a longish wheelbase, big and fast 65mm wheels, a kicktail for instant turns in crowded or narrow spaces, and a nice dished concave for comfort…

Only thing missing for a great commuter mini? Perhaps a slightly lower ride height – easier on your knees and hips.

Moderate hills

I mentioned the super stiff maple deck, the nice foot lock-in with minimal hindrance, the high leverage over the trucks. If you got the skills, this mini can be a recipe for some downhill fun.

Just swap the 50º trucks for some 45º, and slap on a set of Oranagatang Fat Frees!

Bowl riding

Also in the CCMD’s DNA. It has the responsiveness, the speed, the pumping, the kicks, the concave, the foot room – and even the 70s looks!

Easy cruising

Without a doubt one of the most stylish beach cruisers out there, all handmade, beautiful wood veneers, paint-free and eco friendly! The ultimate chick/dude magnet for you crazy weekend cruisers.
